JULY NEWS

Nickel, Moly and Chrome were up in June. June’s Nickel averaged $6.79 per pound versus May $5.731 per pound. The 304/304L surcharge for August will rise to $.5800 per pound versus $.4697 in July. June’s Moly averaged $10.34, up about 83 cents from May’s number. The 316/316L surcharge for August will be $.8602 per pound versus $.7055 in July. Nickel is averaging $7.03 per pound this month, so again, September surcharge numbers are on the way up.

Stainless mill lead times are 4 to 8 weeks.

Carbon mills are currently announcing increases; lead times are 5 to 6 weeks.

The Pickling Process

Pickling is the final process for stainless steel and certain alloys. Common stainless steel will not rust when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. But many of the heads we produce will be subject to acids or other corrosive conditions. Stainless steel has a protective layer that forms when the steel surface reacts to the oxygen. This layer can also be disturbed during the forming process.

Pickling restores the corrosion resistance to the original material properties. During the process the heads are completely submerged in a heated 25 foot tank. The pickling solution consists of 10% nitric acid and 1.5% ammonium biflouride. After pickling the heads are sprayed with a high temperature steam cleaner. Without pickling the integrity of the steel could be diminished over time. We can also accommodate pickling plate, piping systems or other stainless spare parts.
