Last month, Brighton highlighted the
cost differential between ASME F & D, 80/10 and Elliptical style heads.
Feedback from last months newsletter indicated more information was needed on
the 80/10 head. So here it is ...
The 80/10 head meets all the requirements of ASME pressure vessel code and
features a dish radius equal to 80 percent of the head diameter and the inside
knuckle radius equal to 10 percent of the head diameter. The 80/10 head should
always be considered as the thickness of the head rises above 1/2" compared to
an ASME F&D. The 80/10 thickness reduction compared to an ASME F& D and the
blank reduction versus an Elliptical make the 80/10 the right choice when
material pricing is increasing in the marketplace (as we will be seeing in
December) and especially for Nickel Alloy heads. Also note that the 80/10 head
should definitely be considered in all external pressure applications due to its
design.
